What's a black hole?

What's a black hole?

Tons of conversations start like this in our family. Everybody gets engaged and wants to add their two bits. Sometimes we look things up on Wikipedia, Google pictures or just talk. Most times one question leads to another. So, I started thinking that I should write down what we've learned about.

To explain what a black hole is, Pål started with gravity, which led to mass. Which led to atoms. When a star's gravitation is so great it pulls everything towards it, even light. Which we can tell because we can detect curvature of light beams. Quite advanced for a six and a half year old, you might think? Well, how else would you explain it?! The cool thing about our kid is, that everything we teach him sticks!!

A day or so later, I came across an article in our local paper about Einstein, black holes and his theory of relativity, which reminded me about our conversation.
